British Values at the Infant School
The government set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy – values of:
- Tolerance
- Mutual respect between those of different faith and beliefs
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty.
At All Saints’ CE Federation, a strong Christian ethos and good Religious Education contributes to spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and enables children to focus their attention on the values by which they might live; ultimately preparing them for adult life in modern, diverse Britain.
The school upholds and explores the value of ‘tolerance’ through:
- Class rules
- Learning about and reflecting on cooperation and teamwork
- Curriculum areas – RE and PHSE
The school upholds and explores the value of ‘mutual respect’ through:
- Staff and older children modelling respectful behaviours
- Celebration of learning (certificates and displays)
- Christian ethos
The school upholds and explores the value of ‘democracy’ through:
- Class and school council
- Pupil voice
- Ensuring processes are democratic for staff and children
The school upholds and explores the value of ‘the rule of law’ through:
- Applying class and school rules consistently
- Opportunities to reflect on the rules and their fairness
The school upholds and explores the value of ‘individual liberty’ through:
- Providing opportunities for children to make their own choices and be responsible for the ones they make
- Collective worship
